The New West Bengal Chief Secretary Is Alapan Bandhopadhayay As HK Dwivedi Becomes Home Secretary

Alapan Bandhopadhayay becomes the new Chief Secretary of West Bengal. Till now he has been holding the post of Home Secretary. From the 1st of October, he is going to hold the office and the new role. It is going to be just a day after Rajiv Sinha, the present Chief Secretary will be retiring on 30th September.

After retirement, Sinha is going to join in the post of Chairman of West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) for three years and all these have been tweeted by Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister on Monday.

HK Dwivedi, who is the finance secretary is going to be in charge as the new home secretary while the secretary for land and land reforms Manoj Pant who also served as the refugee relief and rehabilitation department secretary is going to take over the post of finance secretary. Pant will continue to hold the post as the land department secretary.

Santanu Basu, WBSEDCL CMD, is going to get additional charges of information and culture affairs after Alapan Bandhopadhyay, who was in charge of the department of information and culture affairs will be joining as the Chief Secretary.

The CM has sent her best wishes for her new team as she announced the shuffle as this is likely to be the last of it before the assembly polls in 2021.

Bandhopadhyay is from the 1987 batch of IAS officers from West Bengal and he has been serving several departments of the state government in various capacities. He has been the district magistrate North and South 24 Parganas, and also served in Howrah. He also had a stint in Kolkata as the municipal commissioner of Kolkata and later on, he also headed several departments like that of the home, information and culture, commerce industry, MSME, transport, as the principal secretary. When he was the IAS officer he also served in 2015 as an interim State Election Commissioner.

Bandhopadhyay is an alumnus of the renowned Presidency college in Kolkata, and he has completed his graduation in the subjects of Political Science and he went on to complete the masters in the same subject from the reputed Calcutta University with flying colors. He is a very well-read person and has got a lot of connections with the literati from Bengal.

Various responsibilities are also shuffled by the State Government in several other important departments. The PHE department is going to be headed by Rajesh Pandey and he will also be in charge of the textile department and the MSME. The Sunderbans department is going to be headed by Kanwaljit Singh Cheema along with the department for tribal development.

Rajesh Sinha has been handed over the charges for the transport department and PK Mishra is going to take over the water resource investigation department with fisheries as additional charges as Sumit Gupta, WBIDC executive director, will be the joint secretary in the health department.
