The President of the United States, Joe Biden is very much under pressure to aggressively address the global coronavirus vaccine shortage and he is going to announce as early as Thursday that his administration is going to buy 500 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and donate them among about 100 countries over the next year, according to people who are familiar with the plan.
The White House has reached the deal just in time for the eight-day European trip of Biden which is going to be his very first opportunity to reassert the United States as a world leader and restore the relations that were badly frayed by the former President Donald Trump.
Joe Biden told the U.S. troops after he landed at the RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk in England that they have to end the Covid-19 not just in the United States that they have been doing but also everywhere. He also added that there is no wall high enough to keep them safe from this pandemic or the next biological threat that they are going to face and there will be others as well. He also stated that it will require coordinated multilateral action.
Those people who are very much familiar with the Pfizer deal have said that the United States will pay for the dozes at a not-for-profit price. The first 200 million doses are going to be distributed by the end of this year and it will be followed by 300 million by next June, they have said. The dozes are going to be distributed through Covax as part of the international vaccine sharing initiative.
Right now, Biden is in Europe for a week to attend the NATO and Group of 7 summits. He is also set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva. He is also likely to use the trip to call on other nations as well to step up vaccine distribution.
Jeffrey Zients, the White House official in charge of devising global vaccination strategy in a statement on Wednesday has said that Biden would rally the democracies of the world around solving this crisis globally. This will be done with America leading the way to create the arsenal of vaccines that are going to be critical in our global fight against Covid-19.-19.
